I once thought that feminism was about me. My right to choose my right to fuck my right to abort my right to walk safely on the streets at night my right to my right to my right to
But if I can have a safe, legal abortion but Indigenous women still die in custody, is feminism really working?
If there are more female CEOs but trans women get killed at a higher rate than anyone else, is feminism really working?
If I wear a T-shirt emblazoned with a feminist slogan that is made by poor women in Bangladesh who do not have a living wage, is feminism really working?
I am (un)learning every day and there is so far to go. I believe in justice but I do not believe in the justice system as we know it. I believe abusers should be held accountable, but I also believe that the carceral and police state actively works against feminist beliefs and goals. I believe in a feminism that is more than merchandise and capital.
I believe that everything we know is wrong.
Feminism is not about me or my right to anything. We cannot be free until all of us are free, and all of us cannot be free until the capitalist carceral society we live in is destroyed. From there something new will rise, like a phoenix, and we will do the hard work of starting again and building something better.
